# How Lesson Passes Apply

### Overview

When a Customer books a Lesson and has a matching Lesson Pass, PodPlay applies the Pass automatically at checkout and the Coaching fee for that time is covered. Lesson Passes from a Membership and Lesson Passes from a purchased Lesson Package behave the same way at checkout.

To create Lesson Passes, see Set up Lesson Passes.

### When a Lesson Pass applies

A Lesson Pass applies only when all of these are true:

* The Reservation includes a Coach.
* The Coach is on the Pass's `Coaches` list, or is in the Pass's `Coach tier`.
* The Customer has Lesson Passes remaining.
* Passes are set to be used (the usual `Use all available passes` behavior).

`Max students` does not stop a Pass from applying. It only caps how much of the Coaching rate the Pass covers.

Lesson Passes do not count toward the daily Reservation Pass limit.

### What the Customer pays

| Situation                                                               | Result at checkout                                                                                                       |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| One Pass covers the full Lesson, and the party is within `Max students` | The Coaching line can show $0. |
| The party is larger than `Max students` | The Pass covers the Coaching rate for `Max students`. The Customer pays the difference up to the larger party-size rate. |
| `Includes court fee` is on | The court fee for the same duration is also covered. The court fee is not split by party size. |
| `Includes court fee` is off | The Customer pays the court fee, or uses a Reservation Pass for court time. |
| The Lesson is longer than one Pass covers | PodPlay uses additional Lesson Passes until the Lesson is covered or the Customer runs out. |
| Coaching time is left uncovered | That time is charged at the normal Coaching rate. |

#### How duration maps to Passes

Each Lesson Pass covers the duration set on it.

* A 1-hour Lesson Pass covers a 1-hour Lesson.
* A 1.5-hour Lesson Pass covers a 1.5-hour Lesson with one Pass.
* A 2-hour Lesson with 1-hour Lesson Passes uses two Passes.

### When a Lesson Pass did not apply

Check these in order:

1. Open the Customer's Profile, go to **Packages**, and confirm Lesson Passes remain.
2. Confirm the Lesson's Coach is on the Pass's `Coaches` list or in its `Coach tier`. If the wrong Coach is selected, the Pass does not apply.
3. On the Reservation or booking preview, confirm the Pass appears and the Coaching total is correct.

When staff book a Lesson for a Customer and the Pass is scoped to a single Coach, PodPlay may ask staff to confirm a remap to that Coach.

{% hint style="info" %}
If the Pass settings look wrong, remember that editing a template does not change Lesson Passes already granted to Customers. The Customer keeps the settings from when the Pass was granted.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.podplay.app/play-passes/play-pass-overview/how-lesson-passes-apply-at-checkout.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
